Hormones and Skincare

Hormones and skincare: why your skin changes and what you can do about it

Do you ever feel like your skin suddenly reacts completely differently? One period your skin radiates, while a few weeks later you suffer from pimples, dryness, or a dull complexion. Hormones often play an important role in this. They not only influence how you feel but also how your skin looks and functions.

What do hormones do to your skin?

Hormones are chemical messengers that control all kinds of processes in your body. Your skin also reacts to fluctuations in hormones. During puberty, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, (pre)menopause, or even periods of stress, hormone levels can change. This directly affects sebum production, moisture balance, collagen production, and skin sensitivity.

More sebum and impurities

An increased amount of androgens, such as testosterone, stimulates the sebaceous glands. This can make the skin oilier, and blackheads and pimples appear more quickly. Many women recognize hormonal acne around the jawline or chin, especially just before menstruation.

Dryness and loss of elasticity

During (pre)menopause, the amount of estrogen decreases. As a result, the skin produces less collagen and elastin. The skin can feel thinner, drier, and less firm. Fine lines also often become more visible.

Stress and your skin

Stress increases the production of cortisol, also known as the stress hormone. Chronically elevated cortisol levels can worsen inflammation, weaken the skin barrier, and exacerbate skin problems such as acne, eczema, or rosacea.

How do you support hormonal skin?

While you cannot fully control your hormones, you can optimally support your skin with the right care.

Choose a gentle cleansing product

An aggressive cleanser can damage the skin barrier. Therefore, use a gentle facial cleanser that removes dirt and excess sebum without drying out the skin. Our 100% natural Cleansing Cream is recommended for drier skin, while younger, acne-prone skin may benefit from our gel Wash.

Hydration is always important

Both oily and dry skin need sufficient hydration. Ingredients such as glycerin help the skin retain its moisture and support the skin barrier. Glycerin can be found in our 4-in-1 Wash, Cleansing Cream, Nourishing Face Cream, and 4-in-1 Lotion.

Use active ingredients wisely

Depending on your skin's needs, these (milder) ingredients can make a big difference:

  • Niacinamide: helps with redness, sebum regulation, and strengthens the skin barrier. You can find this ingredient in our Protective Sunscreen SPF30.

  • Vitamin C: protects against free radicals and provides a fresh, even complexion. You can find this in our Nourishing Face Cream and naturally in the oils in the Boosting Serum.

Don't forget sun protection

UV radiation accelerates skin aging and can worsen hyperpigmentation. A daily sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is therefore one of the most important steps in any skincare routine.

Your lifestyle also plays a role

Your skin often reflects what is happening inside your body. A healthy lifestyle therefore supports not only your general health but also your skin.

This includes:

  • sufficient sleep;

  • a varied diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, and healthy fats;

  • drinking enough water;

  • regular exercise;

  • limiting stress as much as possible.

When is it wise to seek help?

Do you continue to suffer from severe hormonal acne, sudden skin changes, or persistent complaints? Then it is wise to contact a general practitioner, dermatologist, skin therapist, or hormone therapist. Finally

Hormones and skincare are inextricably linked. Fluctuations in your hormones can cause your skin to change, but with the right care, a healthy lifestyle, and some patience, you can optimally support your skin. Listen to what your skin needs and adjust your routine when necessary. This way, you give your skin the best chance to remain healthy, strong, and radiant – in every phase of life.
